ABRUZZO
A RESPECTFUL BALANCE BETWEEN MAN AND NATURE
Laced with rivers, lakes, and hot springs, nearly half of Abruzzo’s land is dedicated to national parks and protected reserves. Braced by the strong spine of the Apennine Mountains, the region lays claim to Gran Sasso d’Italia, the highest peak in Europe after the Alps, and Calderone, Europe’s southernmost glacier. The people of Abruzzo have long cultivated a relationship with their land. Their heritage and traditions are preserved in the meticulously kept ancient towns, villages, and castles perched on the region’s hilltops and cliffs. The Adriatic Sea lies to the east, offering miles of pristine golden beaches, cliffs, coves, and all the goodness that comes with the rhythms of seaside life.
Abruzzo has also set the scene for some of Fellini’s best known films, La Strada and Vitelloni, and the small town of Sulmona is the birthplace of Roman poet Ovid. Here a simple plate of spaghetti alla chitarra paired with a glass of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo leaves visitors satisfied in any season.
